Better Late Than Never - Miss M is 14

Miss M turned 14 back on November 2, 2009.
It was a day off school - but not a holiday - which made for a PERFECT Disneyland day!
GREAT friends Tessa & Parker had the day off too so the 3 of them were excited to spend a FUn day at the Happiest Place on Earth.

Mom & Dad came too and were at the park all day... but it was more like a date for us because although we checked in with the teen periodically, they certainly never "hung out" with us (unless you count 10 whole minutes on Tom Sawyer's island!).

We had a great day though, and so did they.
Lots of fun!

Lando is 19!!!!!!!

19 years ago on July 20, 1990, our little Lando was born.
(I need to scan and upload some baby and 'little one' photos of the kids... when I do I will update.)

He was not the easiest baby or toddler. Strong-willed and determined from day one!
But always tender-hearted, wanting to please, loyal, and (believe it or not) slightly cautious.
He loved to be able to quantify things and explain things with numbers and percentages. "Mom, I like steak WAY better than chicken... I'll bet 93% of people like steak better than chicken."

He has always had a strong sense of justice and fairness. Once you earn his respect and admiration, he will go above and beyond to please you and to earn your respect... loyal to the end. But if he believe someone is unfair or unjust, he will cease to care about anything that person thinks or says. He tends to be a "black and white" thinker... if something is black, it is always black - in all circumstances. But if it is white, it is white... not ifs, ands, or buts about it. He doesn't easily change his thinking either, but once he does, it is fairly locked in unless something comes along to deeply challenge it.

He is a learner and a thinker and a grower. He is SO smart and talented. Our whole family loves to listen to Lando play guitar or piano and sing.

Being related to Lando is a joyful ride.

19th birthday party

Brothers

Picnic dinner
Grammie ("don't-poke-eyes-out-with-a-stick") and Grampie making marshmallow roasting sticks from hangers. (With TN cousin Mike looking on.)

Roasting marshmallows with "cousin" Ali.

We showed "Yes Man" from a projector on a white sheet screen.
Mike & Lando watching movie.

Around the firepit.
It was a week night (work night) and it got kinda loud, so we had to shut down festivities around 11:15 so we didn't overly annoy our lovely neighbors.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY LANDO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bday x 2

Happy birthday Daddy!
1 year and 39 years both celebrated on the same day.
What a blessing and a gift.

Waiting for Dad to open his gifts.
Opening gifts.
Bijou loves presents.
Daddy loves presents.
Jade loves wrapping paper?
This is the first year Dad has EVER taken a day off for his birthday.  He takes it off work almost every year for Mom's birthday, but never for his own.  So that was special and unique in and of itself.  When the kids got home from school we all went out for ice cream (Grammie came too) and then Grammie took the kids to Small Groups while Mom & Dad went shopping for more gifts for Dad with his birthday money (thanks grammie & grampie!!) then cuddled up and watched a movie.

You know you are an OUT-OF-CONTROL soccer family when...

... a child player's injury (like a broken toe or foot or a sprained ankle or a concussion) is seen as a betrayal to your commitment to the team.

... your child breaks their toe and Drs. and normal people advise you to take a month off and rest it, but soccer people think this is ridiculous ("It's only a TOE!!!") and when weighing the options, you opt to have your child play any way (and it - as a result - takes 12 weeks for it to heal properly).

... you start buying into the belief that winning "state cup" or a tournament as 12 year olds has some deep, intrinsic value that will either a) help your child get a full-ride college scholarship or b) solve a global crisis.

... the only birthday party your child has attended since starting club soccer is that of fellow teammates because only THEY can keep up with your crazy game & practice schedule and schedule a party at an open time.

... parents and coaches on the team find it difficult to make eye contact with you or speak to you  because you are daring to go on a family vacation and miss a game... and you actually feel guilty and think this is normal. (Seriously?)

... you have the mentality that a low-level child's soccer game is actually a worthy reason to miss: a wedding, a baby shower, a family vacation, a birth, visiting a sick family member,  a birthday, or a family reunion.

... you don't let your 9 year old child join other activities because it conflicts with soccer.  Where is their dedication?

... you are ANGRY that a 12 year old child missed a Penalty kick and think that your coach's repeatedly letting the same player miss these kicks is grounds for firing.

YOU KNOW YOU ARE STARTING TO BECOME less OF A SOCCER FAMILY WHEN...

... the above (and below) start to seem a little sick, unbalanced and wrong.

Bitter much?
